Environmental Education
In the field of educational leisure, a series of activities and workshops aimed at promoting awareness of care for the environment has been conducted in Sol hotels.
Among them are the following:
Development of Alternative Energies
In the field of alternative energies, Sol Meliá has struck out for geothermal energy, recently introduced in Spain, albeit with a significant presence in Europe.
The installation of this technology for thermostat control in the Sol Mirlos-Tordos Hotel in Palmanova (Majorca) will prevent the emission of over 200 MT of CO2 into the atmosphere every year, apart from reducing the operating costs of the centre. The economic effort undertaken in this measure is a new testimony of the company’s environmental commitment.
Energy Savings
The emission of contaminating agents into the atmosphere in the hotel sector is linked to energy consumption. These emissions can take place both in the centre itself, as a result of fuel transformation, and as induced, in the electric power production areas.
The Sol Meliá policy in this field is based on two premises. The first premise is that the cleanest energy is unconsumed energy. The second consists of obtaining the greatest energetic efficiency, solely using power at the appropriate moment, where necessary, and at the intensity required for maintaining comfort.
In keeping with its environmental commitment, Sol Meliá has started up the SAVE 2005 project. The SAVE 2005 project is aimed at increasing the energetic efficiency of the company.
