Environmental Policy

Sol Meliá’s commitment to the environment has led the hotel chain to orient its business activity towards the principles of sustainable development. It was not in vain that Sol Meliá became the first Spanish company to draw up its own Environmental Protection Manual in 1995, which has been progressively implemented in all the hotels of the chain.

Within the framework of the efforts undertaken by Sol Meliá in the environmental field, some establishments in the chain have conducted activities ranging from the rationalization of the use of resources (energy, water, dangerous substances, etc.), the reduction of waste and selective garbage disposal to respect for the fauna and the cultural resources proper to each country in which Sol Meliá is present.

Within its Environmental Policy and commitment to the environment, Sol Meliá continuously gives impulse to the following measures in both its hotels and corporate offices:

• Use of low-consumption light bulbs and luminaries
• Paper recycling
• Recycling of toner and ink cartridges, etc.
• Priority in the use of recycled paper for internal use
• Priority in the purchase of recycled office articles
• Priority in the purchase of products in recyclable, recycled, reusable and bulk recipients
• Priority in the purchase of concentrated products
• Priority in the use of chemical products not aggressive to the environment
• Gradual substitution of basic chemical products such as bleach, muriatic acid, etc.
• Priority in the purchase of artificial Christmas trees for Christmas decor
• Separation of waste in those geographical areas where Municipalities carry out selective waste collection
• Priority in the purchase of bathroom equipment with water saving systems in tanks.
• Mini-bars with ISO 7371 certification (low energy consumption).
• Inclusion of hotels within those leisure activities aimed at learning about autochthonous natural wealth and the participation of clients in environmental activities, promoting trekking, bicycle and horseback-riding excursions
• Information to hotel clients regarding the environmental policy of the company and of the specific hotel, inviting them to collaborate by means of a responsible water, energy and electrical consumption
